An Annual Event
SCAHMS (Southern California Area Historical Miniatures Society) consists of a small but dedicated group of figure and modeling miniaturists. Their interests range from the minute exactness of Bill Horan's usually scratch built Napoleonic figures to Shawn Warcott's fantasy menageries like a giant with ship on his head reminiscent of the scene from Time Bandits (see photos at right).
Each year that put on a show in Anaheim called aptly "The California Show". I have been four years running now, and I don't see me missing one any time soon. I had actually joined the club last year as an attempt to support them better and be better informed about club activities, etc. Being that I live 4 hours away to the north I am unable to make any regular meetings, but I like to think I am doing my part with these reports to help the club keep doing what they do best, and that is create fine miniatures and models.
As usual of late I called up my traveling buddy, Charles Reading, and we made plans to drive down on Friday for the show. Historicus Forma had a table at the show this year and so we had to be there at 5pm to setup. Charles was nice enough to drive over to the Fresno area to pick me up and we had a great drive down. We talked about economics.... errr wait no we actually talked mostly about modeling.... and the drive down went pretty fast.
I had called Dragon USA a few days before and they had invited us to their offices to talk about the sites and future plans for Dragon Expo. Well we tried to get them to tell us anyways.
The guys were great though and even took us out to a very nice Cantonese Restaurant where Charles and I were treated to really authentic Chinese food. I would like to thank them again for their hospitality. Sadly we couldn't get them to give us a tour of the warehouse but we did see many many boxes of kits being loaded up for delivery when we got there. Trust me it's a happening place.
